Haarlem: The Netherlands’ Quietly Beautiful Secret
Only 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam, Haarlem is a city that feels like a page from a storybook. Less crowded than its famous neighbour Amsterdam, but just as rich in beauty, Haarlem is the kind of place where church bells echo through cobbled streets, windmills guard the river, and indie bookshops, and cinnamon-scented cafés feel like warm hugs. Whether you're travelling solo or are simply seeking a slower pace, Haarlem is perfect for a half-day trip from Amsterdam.
TOP 4 Things to Do in Haarlem
Here's what made my day magical and what you should do too when visiting the city:
🕍 1. Grote Markt & the Church of St. Bavo (Grote Kerk)
Haarlem’s Grote Markt is the historic heart of the city. It is lined with cafés, boutiques, and centuries of charm. In its center stands the stunning St. Bavo Church, a soaring Gothic cathedral where Mozart once played the organ. With a bit of luck, you'll encounter the bustling square with a wonderful farmers market. They sell everything from homemade breads, pies and warm soups to flowers and plants, and of course, a wide range of clothes, shoes, trinkets and accessories. There’s something for everyone - and every wallet - at this historic market.
🧺 Market Opening Times: Mondays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
🕰️ Church Opening Times: Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
🎟️ Entry: €4 for adults, €2 for children/youth
✨ Don’t miss the massive pipe organ or the stained glass windows, because they are absolutely breathtaking!
🌿 2. Relax at Ripperdapark
A calm green space just a short walk from the city center, Ripperdapark is where locals go to slow down. I enjoyed the view of freshly grown crocuses at beginning of March. Bonus: the park is great for people-watching.
🌬️ 3. Visit Molen De Adriaan (Adriaan Windmill)
Perched on the Spaarne River, Molen De Adriaan is Haarlem’s iconic windmill. You can tour the inside or just admire it from the other side of the river, like I did. I can imagine that it would be especially magical during golden hour.
🕰️ Hours: Open Tuesday - Sunday, typically 1 - 5pm.
🎟️ Entry: ~5€ for adults

📚 4. Browse Catnap Books
Catnap Books might be one of the coziest corners of Haarlem. It’s a quiet, thoughtfully curated bookshop where time slips away easily. It's the perfect place, if you're a book lover or just want a warm place to escape from a rainy day in the city.
Haarlem's Food Guide: Cozy Spots You’ll Love
Café hopping is half the joy of visiting Haarlem. Here are some of the cutest spots I explored:
Oscar – Chic breakfast and brunch with perfect coffee.
Darras Coffee Roasters – Minimal, warm, and seriously good beans.
Mama’s Soup – Soul food in a cup, ideal for a cozy, nourishing lunch.
Good Bear Cookies – The name says it all (yes, the hype is real; you should get two, three or even four).
Crepeaffaire – Sweet or savory, this spot hits all the crêpe craving you may have.
Chocolate Company Café – For when you need a rich, slow chocolate moment.
Pro tip: try to visit at least one café in the morning and one late in the day. It’s the best way to feel the rhythm of the city.
