Edinburgh Castle: A View Worth Chasing
Edinburgh Castle isn’t just a historic landmark, it’s the dramatic centerpiece of the Scottish capital. Perched high on Castle Rock, an extinct volcano, it dominates the skyline of the historic city, and demands to be seen from every angle possible. Whether you're a photographer, a history buff, or just here for the royal vibes, finding the perfect viewpoint for your perfect photo makes all the difference. Here are 5 of the best places to admire and capture Edinburgh castle in all its Gothic glory. Save these for your next trip to Edinburgh - you’ll want every angle because only one definitely isn't enough!

Grassmarket
For a lively, atmospheric view, head to Grassmarket, not far from the famous Victoria Street. This bustling square is lined with pubs, shops, restaurants, and lots of stories from the past. It combines historic charm with a dramatic castle towering over the city.
📌 Ultimate Tip: If the weather is good, grab a pint at an outdoor table and enjoy the view as locals and tourists pass by - great for people watching!

The Vennel Steps
Tucked behind the Grassmarket and framed by stone alleyways, The Vennel Steps feel like a hidden secret portal to the past. Climb the quiet stone stairway and you'll be met with a breathtaking, almost cinematic, post-card worthy view of the castle rising above Edinburgh's rooftops. It might not be a hidden gem anymore, but it's magical nonetheless!
📌 Ultimate Tip: I think, this spot is especially photogenic in autumn with moody Scotttish skies and colourful trees nearby. If it fits into your itinerary, you can also try to visit during golden hour for softer lighting and orange sunset skies.

I visited in mid-September, so if you want peak autumn foliage, I'd recommend to visit Edinburgh a tad later in the season: the famous vibrant autumn colours usually occour in October.
Princes Street & Princes Street Gardens
Whether you're walking along the bustling Princes Street or relaxing in the gardens below, you get the classic postcard view of Edinburgh Castle. The dramatic contrast between the historic stone castle and the peaceful green space makes it a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike.
📌Ultimate Tip: Take a quiet relaxing walk through the gardens starting from Scott's Monument for the best views or bring your friends and family for a picnic in the greenery.

Ross Fountain
Situated within Princes Street Gardens, Ross Fountain offers an elegant foreground to the castle's rugged silhouette. The ornate bronze and tourquoise fountain framed by flowers in bloom is one of the most romatic views in the city. It is THE aesthetic Pinterest photo spot and perfect for a fairytale vibe straight from a storybook!
📌 Ultimate Tip: I can imagine that this spot would be especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset when the light hits the fountain and castle just in the right angle - ideal for dreamy photos!

St. Cuthbert's Church & Kirkyard
You're looking for a quieter, and more haunting view? The graveyard of St. Cuthbert's Church at the west end of Princes Street Gardens offers a unique angle of the castle looming above ancient trees and gravestones.
📌 Ultimate Tip: This hidden gem feels like a scene from a Gothic novel - Frankenstein, where are you? It's just perfect for dark and moody shots during a quiet morning walk in foggy weather.

Final Thoughts: See The Castle From Every Angle
You don’t need to go inside Edinburgh Castle to experience its presence. I haven't seen the inside of Edinburgh Castle either, but I am hoping to tick this experience off my bucketlist on my next visit to the Scottish capital. Important to know: book your tickets early in advance!
All in all, these five viewpoints let you appreciate the scale, history, and beauty of Edinburgh castle. From quiet, hidden corners and alleyways to bustling streets and squares: each view offers something a little different, so charge your camera, wear comfy shoes, and start chasing castle views. I can assure you, that you won’t regret a single step!
